On November 29, 2018, Roxanna Barboza, the National Hispanic Media Coalition’s Univision Policy Fellow, had an opportunity to visit Univision Communications Inc. (UCI) offices in Washington, D.C. She had one on one meetings with UCI leadership including Jessica Herrera-Flanigan, Executive Vice President of Government and Corporate Affairs, and René Muñoz the Director of Government Affairs, providing unique opportunities to inquire about pathways to leadership at UCI.
Roxanna also had an opportunity to learn about how UCI develops strong working relationships with community organizations and key stakeholders at the local and national level. Team members shared how their experience working in Government and Corporate Affairs have influenced change in the Latino community. For example, UCI focuses on partnership strategies to amplify the Latino voices on the Hill and in local settings. In Roxanna’s own words, “It was inspiring to see Latinos in this environment where we help ensure that our people’s voices are heard.”
Roxanna is a first-generation college Latina student who is committed to serving the Latino community. Like many Fellows grappling with the demands of senior year, Roxanna wonders how her career will take shape after graduation. But, after having conversations with policy leaders at Univision, her mindset changed. They reiterated that her career path does not necessarily have to be carved out in stone. Roxanna realizes that she’s already making a difference.
