<![CDATA[Last week, NHMC joined several other public interest organizations in asking the U.S. Senate to oppose proposed legislation that would hamper government agencies from implementing and enforcing vital consumer protections. In a letter to Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Minority Leader Charles Schumer, NHMC urged opposition to H.R. 21 the Midnight Rules Review Act (MRRA), H.R. 26 the REINS Act, and H.R. 5 the Regulatory Accountability Act (RAA)–all of which strip federal agencies from the powers to protect consumers from corporate abuse. The MRRA would bundle several months’ worth of rules implemented by the Federal Communications Commission with several other rules from multiple agencies for the purposes of a single Congressional repeal measure, directly contradicting years of precedent. The REINS Act would prevent federal agencies from implementing rules without Congressional approval, eliminating delegation of important work from expert officials. Lastly, the RAA would add several procedural requirements to agencies’ rulemaking process. Joining NHMC in signing the letter were Common Cause, Fight for the Future, Media Mobilizing Project, OpenMedia, Public Knowledge, and United Church of Christ, OC Inc. http://www.nhmc.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/Public-Interest-Letter.pdf]]>
