NHMC Statement on the Big Beautiful Bill

July 9, 2025

Statement from Brenda Victoria Castillo, President & CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition on the passing of the “Big Beautiful Bill”

The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) vehemently condemns the passage of H.R. 1, the Big Beautiful Bill Act, not only for its devastating impact on the American people but because it undermines our shared American values. At NHMC, we are deeply concerned about the long-term impact this legislation will have on the daily lives of people across the country.

This Big Beautiful Bill is a direct assault on the systems that hold our communities together. It slashes Medicaid, food stamps, and student loan support - lifelines for millions of Latino, Black, Indigenous, and immigrant people and families across the nation. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) (commonly referred to as “food stamps”) alone will be cut by 20 percent, threatening food security for children, seniors, and working-class people.

It guts the safety net that millions rely on to survive, putting nearly 12 million Americans at risk of losing their healthcare due to cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act, all to pay for massive tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy. It also pours billions into the border wall, mass deportations utilizing dangerous technologies, and a bloated military budget, igniting fear and division among the communities that shape our nation. The passing of this legislation threatens clean energy progress, eliminates jobs, and reverses progress made by frontline communities protecting their health and environment.

While claiming to provide support to the American people, the bill adds to the national debt and reduces life saving resources that millions rely on for survival. Our elected officials have a sworn duty to defend our communities, ensuring that we are protected and empowered. This bill betrays that responsibility. It ignores the lived realities millions of Americans are already facing and deepens the inequality experienced by those in need.

We stand with the American people who are directly impacted by this legislation, the very individuals who are overwhelmingly opposed to it. This bill affects every single one of us–regardless of your political beliefs or party alignment. Whether you are a working-class family, a senior citizen, or simply trying to make ends meet, this legislation will have consequences for you and for generations to come.Defending our democracy starts at the ballot box and we urge everyone to vote with humanity.
