Take a seat this weekend and watch North of North, a sitcom comedy featuring members of the Inuit community. Siaja, played by Anna Lambe, is a young Inuk mother trying to navigate motherhood, relationships, and a new job after spontaneously exiting her marriage to the town’s golden boy. Living in a tiny tight-knit Arctic town, she must find her way while defying societal expectations.

The National Hispanic Media Coalition Presents Building Community: Indigenous Food Panel

The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) hosted its latest Building Community episode, which brought together various Indigenous chefs. “The panel was centered around their relationship with Indigenous food, and how they grew up with different but similar experiences that allowed them to learn about their Indigenous ancestral food and ingredients,” writes Denise Florez of Caló News. This episode specifically dives into the decolonization of Mexican food and the future of how we identify Latino cuisine.

About the Yéigo Action Grant

The Yéigo Action Grant provides support for the growing landscape of Native artists and culture bearers who need financial assistance with a specific professional opportunity or towards a hardship that is hindering their creative practice.

This program offers grants between $100 and $1,000 for individual Native artists and culture bearers. First Peoples Fund (FPF) finds it essential to support artists in their times of need, especially when their work is impacted by sudden hardship. This grant’s name incorporates the Diné word, yéigo, often used as a phrase of encouragement that can mean “keep going” or “don’t give up.”

While some hardship requests related to a current artistic project may be eligible, please note that Yéigo Action Grants are not intended to assist with funding new or existing artist projects.

KEY INFORMATION

Grant amount: $100-$1,000

Application deadline: 3:00 pm MT on the 10th of every month

Funding Usage Guidelines

Funds may be used for: 

  • Assistance with signing up for a specific art opportunity (market entry fees, workshop fees,  etc.)
  • Support for an artist attending a residency, seminar, or any other professional development opportunity (travel, lodging, meals, etc). 
  • Emergency disaster relief (fire, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc).
  • Repair of damaged equipment or tools.
  • Unanticipated transportation needs for work or professional travel (vehicle repair, car rental, bus pass, rideshare, etc.)
  • Unanticipated medical expenses that impact an artist’s ability to work and create.
  • Sudden, unexpected expenses for a current project (such as replacing damaged supplies, needing to find a new venue, etc). 

Applicant Eligibility

  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.
  • Must be a U.S.-based resident. 
  • Applicants must be an enrolled member of, or provide proof of lineal descendancy from, a U.S. federally-recognized or U.S. state-recognized tribe, or be able to provide proof of ancestry as an Alaska Native or Native Hawaiian.
  • Applicant must be a practicing artist.
  • Applicant has not previously received a Yéigo Action Grant.

On Swift Horses is a drama of love, longing, and betrayal set during the 1950s postwar America. The film follows a newlywed couple Muriel and Lee, whose world is shifted by the arrival of Julius, Lee’s younger brother. Their lives begin to unravel in unpredictable ways through complexities of love, loyalty, and identity. 

Starring Diego Calva, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Jacob Eldori, Will Poulter, the film invites viewers to engage with poetic visuals.

Real Women Have Curves: The Musical focuses on the immigrant experience and Latino culture in America. Based on the play by Josefina Lopez, the musical tells the story of Ana Garcia, a young woman in East Los Angeles dreaming of escaping her family’s sewing factory. As she faces critical challenges with her family’s business, Ana must balance her personal ambitions and her family’s expectations. 

Tatianna Cordoba, who plays Anna Garcia, makes her Broadway debut and is the first immigrant to star in a Broadway show.  The production aims to represent the vibrant, hard-working, and hopeful spirit of Latino immigrants. Directed and choreographed by Tony Award-winner Sergio Trujillo, he hopes to highlight the message of resilience and authenticity of the Latino immigrant experience. NHMC will honor Real Women Have Curves: The Musical in this year’s 2025 NHMC Impacts New York Awards on April 23rd and will be accepted by Jack Noseworthy, the producer, on behalf of the production.
