WHAT: Ahead of the election year, The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) hosted an educational panel discussion, Disinformation in 2024: A 360 View, which is live now on NHMC’s YouTube Channel

As we gear up for another presidential election, experts in social media platform accountability from a wide array of diverse communities and backgrounds gathered to share ideas and prepare our communities for disinformation online in 2024. Featuring the next generation of leaders and experts in policy advocacy, the panel will discuss the immense power social media has in spreading misinformation and the steps individuals, communities, and organizations can take to tackle it.

Featured panelists include:

Panel Moderator:

  • Daiquiri Ryan Mercado, Esq., Strategic Legal Advisor & Policy Counsel at the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC)

The NHMC joined other civil rights, Latino leadership, and consumer advocacy organizations in creating the Spanish Language Disinformation Coalition (SLDC), to defend the fundamental and equitable rights of all to express themselves, access information, and engage in the open exchange of ideas online. The coalition was created to protect against disinformation, hateful content, and other forms of divisive and dangerous information and media manipulation posing a threat to Spanish-speaking communities.

Other organizations in the SLDC include: Anti-Defamation League (ADL), Battle Born Progress, Common Cause, Digital Democracy Institute of the Americas (DDIA), Equis Labs, Free Press, Fundamedios, Global Project Against Hate and Extremism (GPAHM), Green Latinos, Hispanics in Philanthropy, Media Matters, NALEO Educational Fund, Omidyar Network, Reset Tech, United We Dream, We Are Casa.

National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) is a woman-led 501(c)(3) non-profit, nonpartisan, civil and human rights organization that was founded to eliminate hate, discrimination, and racism toward Latino and marginalized communities.

We educate and increase Latino visibility from our policy work in Washington, D.C., to our media advocacy work in Hollywood, where we connect, collaborate, and create with talent within the entertainment industry.

We lead the work to eliminate online hate and disinformation across media platforms. We advocate for the Affordable Connectivity Program, Lifeline Program, Net Neutrality protections, and closing the digital divide for Latino and other marginalized communities. NHMC works in partnership with other social justice organizations to safeguard democracy in the United States of America.

NHMC is a not-for-profit, and provides equal opportunities to all individuals without regard to race, religion, national origin, disability, age, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity or expression, veteran status, or any other status protected by law
