2024 SAG Award Winners: A Step in the Right Direction Towards an Inclusive Hollywood
Statement on Behalf of Brenda Victoria Castillo, President and CEO, of the National Hispanic Media Coalition on the 2024 SAG Awards
The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) congratulates the winners of the 2024 SAG Awards for their exceptional achievements in film and television. A special congratulations to Lily Gladstone for her historic win for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her performance in Killers of the Flower Moon.
A special congratulations to Latine actor Pedro Pascal for his incredible win for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series for his role in The Last of Us, along with Jose Cervantes Jr and Liza Colón-Zayas for their wins for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series with the cast of The Bear, and celebrate alongside many other creatives of color for their success on the night as well.
While we would like to commend the voters for continuing to make history, we challenge SAG, and all award shows promising to recognize excellence – to move past firsts. Although these nominations and wins were a step in the right direction, Latine representation should be the norm, not the exception. We want to see talented actors from underrepresented communities win awards not just intermittently, but consistently.
Coming off of one of the most successful strikes in entertainment history, we see a tremendous opportunity for SAG to elevate, celebrate, and build bridges with their more than 4,000 Latine members facing a new future within the industry.
We welcome an opportunity to work with SAG to find ways to keep pushing for a direction of inclusivity, one that will allow creatives and talent of color to continue showcasing their authentic stories in Hollywood and thrive. Consistent recognition of artists of color not only promotes and elevates brilliant stories, but also inspires the next generation of storytellers. We look forward to the upcoming Academy Awards, and will continue to push for our voices to be heard in any and all spaces, looking forward to the day when our work is recognized on a consistent basis throughout Hollywood.
Yours in the Movement,
Brenda Victoria Castillo
