A Statement by Brenda Victoria Castillo, President & CEO of The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC)

NHMC stands with the Black Lives Matter movement today in relief of a guilty verdict on all three counts of Derek Chauvin’s murder of George Floyd in 2020. While we commend the jury and the justice system for this guilty verdict, we know that one verdict of accountability definitely does not mean justice for all. With the recent murders of Adam Toledo and Daunte Wright, we know that systematic racism still runs rampant in the U.S. police force. We bear witness everyday to the White supremacy and hate that is ingrained in every part of our nation.

NHMC is thinking of the Floyd family, and every family who grieves the loss of a family member at the hands of the police and other racially motivated violence. We are also thinking of BIPOC communities, many of whom are victims of traumatic encounters with law enforcement, as we cope with today’s verdict and attempt to heal. Let today’s relief be a constant reminder that the fight against hate and racism is ongoing, and will take reflection, commitment, and action from us all. May all those who are not Black take the time to listen to those who are.

In Solidarity,

Brenda Victoria Castillo
