The NHMC Impact Awards was created to honor outstanding contributions to the positive portrayals of Latinos in media, including film and television. “Though the Oscars this year once again failed to recognize the tremendous Latino talent in entertainment today, NHMC’s Impact Awards Gala seeks to give these creatives the accolades they deserve and excite a new generation of young people,” said Alex Nogales, NHMC’s president and CEO.

7-300x289 NHMC recently welcomed Eduardo Osorio, a second year law student from UC Davis School of Law, as its Spring 2017 Univision Policy Fellow. The paid fellowship program, housed at NHMC, allows one law student per semester to learn about media and telecommunications policy issues from a civil rights and public interest perspective. Originally from Los Angeles, California, Eduardo was raised in a Latino neighborhood of the San Fernando Valley. Growing up, Eduardo saw how laws and policies, such as Proposition 187, affected the people around him. Wishing to serve as a voice for his community, Eduardo pursued a career in law. D.C. Policy Update

privacy-300x200 NHMC Co-Hosts Net Neutrality Briefing on Capitol Hill On February 27th, the Voices for Internet Freedom, led by NHMC, Free Press, the Center for Media Justice, and Color of Change, co-hosted a congressional briefing marking the 2-year anniversary of the Federal Communication Commission’s adoption of Net Neutrality rules. NHMC’s Special Policy Advisor, and former FCC Commissioner, Gloria Tristani made opening remarks at the briefing. FCC Commissioner Mignon Clyburn and Representative Maxine Waters (CA-43) also delivered opening remarks. NHMC Responds to Chairman Pai’s Attacks on Lifeline In early February, the FCC released an order revoking nine lifeline broadband provider designations that had already been approved to offer internet service to low-income consumers. NHMC joined a group of public interest organizations that same day blasting the FCC’s actions. Later in the month, NHMC also joined 36 other organizations in asking the FCC to swiftly move forward with implementing the modernization order. NHMC specifically asked the FCC to overturn the revocation of nine carriers and reject further efforts to undermine the modernization to include broadband. NHMC Responds to Privacy Intrusions at U.S. Border NHMC joined numerous human rights and civil liberties organizations, as well as law and technology experts, in denouncing the U.S. government’s questionable data collection practices of non-citizens entering the country. In a joint statement, NHMC and other organizations condemned Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly’s suggestion that DHS could require non-citizens to provide passwords to social media accounts. This proposal would fail to increase citizens’ security and unfairly invade privacy of anyone attempting to enter the U.S. Such a practice could also have a chilling domino effect, encouraging other countries to adopt similar policies and discouraging travelers from using online services. Similarly, NHMC joined several groups in asking United Nations experts to investigate reported U.S. practices of investigating electronic devices and requiring passwords from people entering the country. NHMC Opposes Neil Gorsuch’s Nomination to Supreme Court On February 15th, NHMC joined 107 other civil and human rights organizations in urging the U.S. Senate to oppose President Trump’s nomination of Judge Neil M. Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. In a letter to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles Grassley and Ranking Member Diane Feinstein, the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and 107 national organizations cited Judge Gorsuch’s troubling record on discrimination claims, workers’ rights, immigration, womens’ health, LGBT rights, police misconduct, disabilities, voting rights, and environmental protection, among other civil rights issues.
