Statement on behalf of Brenda Victoria Castillo, President & CEO, National Hispanic Media Coalition regarding the films that have been selected for the 2023 National Film Registry

The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) uplifts the selection of influential films for the 2023 Library of Congress National Film Registry. The National Film Registry works to preserve important movies for future generations - but only three percent of titles on the list tell Latine stories.

I am elated to see films that haven’t received the recognition they deserve, included in this prestigious list of preserved films. The inclusion of stories depicting underrepresented communities facing topics such as love and family that don’t fall into traditional stereotypes are so rarely honored. The films that have been selected for this year’s list have shaped cinematic history because of their honest storytelling. Through this truth, they have paved the way for the films of today.

I’m proud that Latine stories like ¡Alambrista! will be preserved for generations to come alongside films with diverse casts like Fame, Love & Basketball, and the Bohulano Family Film Collection. NHMC applauds every film on the list for its contribution to our United States history. As a member of the National Film Preservation Board advising on the selection, I look forward to celebrating many more diverse films in the years to come and I stand by my commitment to ensuring Latinos are included in future film preservation registry lists.
