May 2, 2025

Statement on Behalf of Brenda Victoria Castillo, President and CEO, National Hispanic Media Coalition on 2025 Tony Awards Nominations

The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) applauds the 2025 Tony Award nominations for their recognition of Latino stories and talent. We would like to especially congratulate our 2025 NHMC Impacts New York Award honoree, REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES: THE MUSICAL, which has been nominated in 2 categories, including a nod for NHMC Visionary Alliance Member Justina Machado (Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical)! A special congratulations to Joy Huerta and Benjamin Velez for their nomination for Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre.

Today’s nominations reflect the vibrancy of our Latino stories, transcending film and television, and being recognized and enjoyed on Broadway. Our community is not a monolith, and we are proud to see two distinct Latino stories making their mark on Broadway's stages.

We would like to congratulate the team behind BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB for their 10 Tony Award nominations, including Best Play, Marco Ramirez (Best Book of a Musical), Natalie Venetia Belcon (Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical), Arnulfo Maldonado (Best Scenic Design of a Musical), Dede Ayite (Best Costume Design of a Musical), Tyler Micoleau (Best Lighting Design of a Musical), Jonathan Deans (Best Sound Design of a Musical), Patricia Delgado and Justin Peck (Best Choreography), Saheem Ali (Best Direction of a Musical), and Marco Paguia (Best Orchestrations).

Storytelling is a powerful art form with the ability to shape perspectives and we are so proud our Latino stories are being recognized on such a prestigious stage.

Yours in the Movement,

Brenda Victoria Castillo
