Automakers removing AM radio from vehicles is a threatening move for the general public

January 31, 2025

A Statement from Brenda Victoria Castillo, President & CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC)

The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) stands firmly in support of legislation that protects and preserves access to AM radio in motor vehicles. On January 29, the “AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act” was reintroduced in Congress, and we at NHMC urge lawmakers to uphold and prioritize this vital resource, which serves as a lifeline for millions of people in the United States, particularly during times of disaster or crisis.

AM radio is unparalleled in its ability to provide reliable, real-time communication during emergencies, including natural disasters and power outages. Unlike mobile networks, which can fail under strain, AM radio is a resilient and free resource that reaches over 80 million listeners in the United States. Less than two years ago, when the Maui wildfires of 2023 led to power outages and the loss of cell service and internet access, AM radio stations in the Maui region became a vital source of information, resources, and safety for the affected communities. AM radio is an essential part of our national emergency infrastructure and a critical tool for public safety.

Beyond its role in emergencies, AM radio amplifies diverse voices and ensures representation in our media landscape. With over 4,000 stations nationwide, AM radio fosters cultural resonance and offers an indispensable platform for marginalized communities to share news, stories, and perspectives.

Efforts by automakers to remove AM radio from vehicles, often under the guise of technological advancement, pose significant risks to public safety and equity. These actions prioritize corporate cost-cutting over the well-being of the public, potentially leaving millions without access to vital information during critical moments. The recent wildfires in Los Angeles and the delay in sending out mobile phone evacuation alerts to people in Altadena underscore the need to preserve AM Radio.

We call on Congress to pass legislation to protect AM radio and its unique ability to connect, inform, and save lives. This is not a partisan issue; everyone accesses our critical communications infrastructure. Let us work together to safeguard this irreplaceable medium for all people, ensuring it remains a beacon of reliability and safety for future generations.

Yours in Movement,
