NHMC Urges FCC to Further Research and Increase TV Ownership Diversity

filed comments on the Federal Communication Commission's Hispanic Television Study, which detailed the dearth of Latinx television owners. In its comments, NHMC urged the FCC to conduct further research to better understand the root causes behind this lack of diversity and ultimately take steps to promote ownership diversity. Released this past May, the study measured 39 television markets representing nearly 80 percent of Latinx audiences, finding only 23 Latinx-owned stations for its sample. In its comments, NHMC emphasized that this study is too narrowly focused to direct policy and that the Commission should build upon this initial analysis to fulfill its statutory obligation to promote ownership diversity. Notably, the study also found that Latinx-owned stations were more likely to carry local programming and enjoy better ratings than Spanish-speaking, non-Latinx owned counterparts.  ]]>
