This week, NHMC’s President and CEO, Brenda Victoria Castillo, was interviewed by Kalia Richardson of Rolling Stone. In the article, Brenda gave her thoughts on whether the Academy’s changes are institutional or performative and if we have seen an increase in underrepresented nominees. 


A Decade After #OscarsSoWhite, Can Hollywood Do Better?

The hashtag that spawned a social justice movement also prompted real change in the entertainment industry — but not enough

When #OscarsSoWhite became a battle cry for diversity in Hollywood, she called Reign to ask for permission to use the phrase in press releases and public statements. Castillo says she applies its underlying ethos in her advocacy and policy work.
