NHMC Speaks Out on Spread of Disinformation in Light of Donald Trump’s Indictment

A Statement from Brenda Victoria Castillo, President & CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC)

[/vc_column_text][nd_options_spacer nd_options_height="15"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]For the first time in American history, a person who has served as United States president has been criminally charged, proving that in this country, no man – not even the former President of the United States – is above the law.

Today, Donald Trump was charged with more than 30 felony counts in relation to business fraud – and in the last several days, not only has Donald Trump has not only denied any responsibility for his wrongdoing, but has also continued to plant the seeds of disinformation to incite confusion, invoke a response, and bring unrest across the country – using his tried and true playbook to stoke the anger of his base by calling his arraignment, “Political persecution and election interference at the highest level in history.”

From calling the left  "Thugs and Radical Left Monsters” to adding that his case, “IS AN ATTACK ON OUR COUNTRY THE LIKES OF WHICH HAS NEVER BEEN SEEN BEFORE," Donald Trump’s continuous spewing of disinformation – with no consequences -- not only makes it more difficult for the justice system to do its job, but continues to fuel the flames of division and potential violence.

But, despite all his rhetoric and bluster, today was a day where Trump realized he may not be so untouchable after all.

The National Hispanic Media Coalition will be watching alongside the rest of the world to see how this case unfolds. Even though history has been made today, will there be true accountability? For the sake of our political institutions, we hope so – and intend to continue pursuing justice until it is served.
