On January 7, 2023, Nichols was pulled over at a traffic stop in Memphis, TN, and was brutally beaten by a squad of police officers. His condition was severely critical and Nichols died at the hospital three days later. The Memphis Police Department and justice system have taken measures to address this tragic incident by charging the cops involved with murder and disbanding the specialized unit they were a part of. NHMC calls out these systems of injustice and demands for a complete transformation of policing in the United States – from the ground up.

We are outraged by the rampant discrimination and police violence that threatens Black and Brown communities across America. This horrific event is another in what feels like an unending stream of white supremacy, racism, and deeply seeded, violent corruption. Our country is at a point past reform. We must completely transform these systems that normalize the dehumanization, brutality, and murder of Black and Brown people.

NHMC remains a strong supporter in the defense of Black lives, and stands in solidarity with our Black and Brown allies – especially those in positions of power–to demand justice and safety for our communities.

We urge you to join us in adding your name to the NAACP’s recent petition, calling for Congress to take action and pass legislation on police reform.

It’s time to stop police brutality and end horrendous violence at the hands of law enforcement. How many more lives will be taken away before change is accomplished? The time is now.

Yours in the Movement,
