NHMC Congratulates Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s Senate Confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court

April 7, 2022

A Statement by Brenda V. Castillo, President & CEO, National Hispanic Media Coalition

As the first Black woman confirmed to sit on the U.S. Supreme Court, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s performance throughout her Senate confirmation was nothing short of exemplary. The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) applauds Judge Brown Jackson on her responses to the Senate Committee on the Judiciary and her work as a federal public defender, federal judge, and Commissioner and Vice-Chair of the U.S. Sentencing Commission. We look forward to her career as a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

As a woman of color, Judge Brown Jackson has fought and advocated for equity in the justice system throughout her career. Judge Brown Jackson’s work as a federal public defender demonstrates why she is well suited to sit on the Supreme Court, as she believes in the rights of any defendant to have adequate representation in criminal proceedings, as required under our Constitution. Attending Harvard for her undergraduate and law school education, her academic credentials are unquestioned. Her extensive legal experience will provide the Supreme Court with perspectives on representing low-income criminal defendants and the impacts of the criminal justice system on historically marginalized communities.

NHMC commends President Joe Biden on his historic nomination and congratulates Justice Brown Jackson as the first black woman to sit on our country’s highest judicial bench.

Yours in the Movement,

Brenda Victoria Castillo
