A Statement from Brenda Victoria Castillo, President & CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC)

On January 6, 2021, our nation had a front row seat to the life-threatening harm that online hate and extremism cause when left unchecked. Blood was shed at the Capitol at the hands of domestic terrorists who used social media applications, like Parler,  to organize and strategize an insurrection. NHMC commends Amazon, Apple, and Google for taking a stand against white supremacy by removing access to and the hosting of the Parler app on their respective platforms.

In November of 2020, the National Hispanic Media Coalition and the Change the Terms coalition sent letters to Sundar Pichai, Chief Executive Officer of Alphabet Inc, and its subsidiary Google and Tim Cook, Chief Executive Officer of Apple requesting the companies remove Parler from their application stores due to the abundance of rampant hate, incitement of violence, conspiracy theories and white supremacy extremist content allowed to remain on the app in violation of developer terms of service. Though action was not as swift as we originally requested, NHMC is encouraged by the companies’ decisions to do the right thing, and protect our democracy and human lives. The removal of Parler from app stores and web-hosting services is a start that will help limit the harm done by dangerous conspiracy theories, seditious planning, and the organization of “call to arms” events.

In addition, NHMC applauds other corporate entities' efforts to hold these white supremacist domestic terrorists, public figures, and politicians accountable. From cancellation of book deals to halting campaign contributions, dismantling white supremacy and championing a more equitable and just country requires strategic and comprehensive efforts.

Yours in the Movement,
