OPEN STATEMENT ON SUPREME COURT DECISION: VICTORY TO LGBTQ+ EMPLOYEES
Yesterday, the Supreme Court of the United States historically ruled that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects LGBTQ+ employees from workplace discrimination, making it illegal to hire or fire anyone based on their sexual orientation or their gender identity. NHMC commends the Supreme Court for reaffirming the constitutional rights of the LGBTQ+ community, and for taking steps to ensure that the LGBTQ+ community can live a life free from discrimination, hate, and bigotry.
NHMC understands that our fight for increased media representation for the Latinx community is intertwined with the fight for LGBTQ+ rights, and that this fight goes far beyond Pride Month. As a civil rights organization, we are committed to centering the Latinx community, which includes the LGBTQ+ community, in all of our advocacy and policy work.
NHMC stands firmly against all efforts to institutionalize and normalize hate in our government and culture; specifically as the Trump Administration takes giant leaps in dehumanizing the transgender and non-binary people.
While we celebrate this week’s victories, we also recognize the deep need to do more to free those who are still being held down by the oppressive laws of our country. NHMC will continue to fight against hate and discrimination until ALL have access to equity and justice.
