January 23, 2025

Statement on Behalf of Brenda Victoria Castillo, President and CEO, National Hispanic Media Coalition, on 2025 Academy Award Nominations

The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) celebrates the diversity and representation of Latinos in this year’s Academy Award nominations. We applaud the themes seen during this awards season including the Latino representation across nominations and the nominations of leading women across categories.

Congratulations to our leading Latinas who were nominated for their first Oscar including Fernanda Torres nominated for Best Actress for her role in I’m Still Here, former NHMC Impact Award honoree, Zoe Saldaña and Monica Barbaro nominated for Best Supporting Actress for their roles in Emilia Pérez and A Complete Unknown, respectively. NHMC also applauds Karla Sofía Gascón for becoming the first openly trans actress to be nominated for an Academy Award for her role in Emilia Pérez.

A special congratulations to former NHMC Impact Award honoree, Colman Domingo for making history as the first Afro-Latino to be nominated two times for Best Actor in a Leading Role, this year for his role in the thoughtfully crafted Sing Sing. Congratulations to Pablo Helman for his nomination in the Best Visual Effects category for his work on Wicked, and Adrian Quesada for his nomination in Best Original Song for “Like A Bird” in Sing Sing.

Now more than ever, it is of utmost importance that the Latino community, and the diversity within it, is accurately represented across all forms of media - from series to films, from short-form videos all the way to the social posts on TikTok, because the way we are represented in the media is how we are treated in political discourse.

NHMC remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring accurate Latino representation across all forms of media. We recognize that cultural shifts move faster than policy changes, and by consistently highlighting diversity within entertainment, we drive the change that policy will one day follow. We urge the entertainment industry to continue celebrating and highlighting diversity, ensuring our stories continue to be told accurately.

Yours in the Movement,

Brenda Victoria Castillo
