NHMC Speaks Out on the Brutal Shooting of Ralph Paul Yarl
A Statement from Brenda Victoria Castillo, President & CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC)
The NHMC – once again – comes to our supporters with a heavy heart in the aftermath of another senseless act of gun violence.
On April 13, 2023, 16 year-old Ralph Paul Yarl was brutally shot twice after ringing the doorbell of a mistaken address while going home to pick up his brothers. Not only was this act of violence heinous and indefensible, but the fact that the homeowner was released 24 hours later – with a statement from the victim required to detain him – is further proof that there continues to be a real problem of inequity in our justice system when it comes to communities of color.
We live in unfortunate times when a man’s first reaction is to shoot over taking the opportunity to help a neighbor in need, let alone a 16 year old. This case sets a dangerous precedent for anyone ringing a doorbell – from a delivery, to trick or treaters and more – but we also cannot ignore the rampant disease that is excessive force upon Black and Brown lives.
We call upon the Kansas City Police Department to hold the shooter accountable. We remain a steadfast supporter of Black and Brown lives and demand justice and safety for our communities.
We are keeping Ralph Paul Yarl and his family in our thoughts and wish for a speedy full recovery.
In solidarity,
Brenda Victoria Castillo
