NHMC Television Writers Program
The submission period for the 2017 NHMC TV Writers Program is almost over! It will close August 6th. The intensive 5-week, paid workshop prepares Latinos for writing jobs at major networks. 35% of the program’s 130 graduates have been staffed on shows on networks such as ABC/Disney, NBC, CBS, FOX, Nickelodeon, CW, BET, LATV, VH1, NUVOtv/FuseTV, Hulu and Netflix. NHMC Hosts Queen of the South Writers
Writers and producers of
Queen of the South joined NHMC
TV Writers Program alumni and NHMC moderator Jordan Rubio for a special panel to discuss everything from how to get staffed to being a Latino writer in Hollywood.
The special guests for the night were executive producer Dailyn Rodriguez, co-producer Ben Lobato, and staff writer Jorge Reyes.
Among the nights’ topics were navigating the writer’s room as a Latino writer to which Ben Lobato said, “Always be listening and reading the room. You have to know when to speak up and when to pull back.”
The night was a successful one filled with good food, great conversation, and, even better, wine.
Dailyn Rodriguez told the alumni, “When diverse people are running shows you start to see everything become more diverse. Allow more diverse people to be in control and the diversity problem will go away.”
NHMC Scene Showcase Casting News
The
Latino Scene Showcase is soon approaching and has officially been casted! The showcase will take place on August 9th at El Portal Theater. Casting is currently taking place and includes some of the best actors in the Los Angeles area. The showcase is in collaboration with the
Los Angeles Theatre Center (LATC). Showcase scenes are written by writers from the
NHMC TV Writers Program and directed by Latino directors.

15th annual Los Angeles Impact Awards Luncheon to be held on September 7th at the Sheraton Universal City Hotel.
The luncheon gathers over 200 industry leaders to recognize talent and community leaders in Los Angeles, the second largest designated market area (DMA) in the country. Latinos Defend Open Internet Protections in a Net Neutrality Day of Action
On July 12th, NHMC helped galvanize the Latino community in an Internet-Wide Day of Action. While the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) moves forward with a proposal to slash the legal foundation for the rules that protect online freedom of expression, nearly 70,000 people, sites, and organizations joined in protest. Participants including mitú, Twitter, Reddit, Netflix, Amazon, Facebook, Google, Kickstarter, Etsy, Vimeo, Mozilla, and Medium displayed prominent messages on their homepages and encouraged users to take action in other ways, using push notifications, videos, social media, and emails.
NHMC Pressures FCC to Delay Proceeding & Disclose Critical Consumer Complaint Information Before Dismantling Net Neutrality
The FCC
denied NHMC’s
Motion For Extension of Time in the FCC’s Restoring Internet Freedom Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM). The Motion urged the FCC to delay its comment and reply comment deadline until it produced public documents that have a direct impact on the proceeding. Through a series of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, Carmen Scurato discovered over 47,000 consumer complaints that were completely ignored in the FCC’s analysis. The FCC also failed to produce documents related to the Open Internet ombudsperson, a role it plans to eliminate, before the first public comment period expired.
People of Color Need the Open Internet: Racial Justice Coalition Urges the FCC to Preserve Net Neutrality Under Title II
NHMC and Free Press filed
comments on behalf of Voices for Internet Freedom, a coalition of organizations advocating for the digital rights of communities of color, calling on the FCC to maintain the strong Net Neutrality protections it adopted in 2015. The comments include more than 100 personal stories from people of color across the country whose lives have been transformed by bright-line Net Neutrality rules.

During the week of July 17th, Alex and the DC team met with several congressional offices to include Congresswoman Nydia Velazaquez, Congressman Tony Cardenas, and Congressman Lou Correa, to discuss Net Neutrality, Lifeline and CHCI’s recent initiative aimed at diversifying the entertainment industry.

In mid-July, NHMC attended the
NFCB Community Media Conference in Denver, Colorado!
NFCB is “the oldest and largest national organization dedicated to community stations within the public media system” that NHMC is proud to be a member of as we embark on our journey to launching our very own LPFM station – KHBG-LP 101.5 FM, based in Pasadena, CA.
