MON., FEB. 5: LATINOS DEMONSTRATE AGAINST THEIR EXCLUSION IN THE FILM INDUSTRY    PASADENA, CALIF. - At the February 5 Oscars® Nominees Luncheon, the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) Action Network will hold the first of two demonstrations targeting studio film executives attending Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences events. The demonstrations launch a national campaign protesting the chronic underrepresentation of Latinos in on-screen and behind-the-camera roles in motion pictures. The NHMC Action Network represents independent writers and producers, and casting, production and entertainment marketing companies. WHY The country's 56 million Latinos represent 18 percent of the U.S. population and 23 percent of all movie ticket buyers yet they remain one of the most underrepresented minorities in Hollywood.
  • Latinos held only 3.1 percent of all movie speaking roles from 2007-2016 while representation among back-of- camera positions, such as writers and directors, was worse.
  • Of the 900 films produced during from 2007-2016, only one film was directed by a Latino.
  • No Latinas were featured in 72 of the top 100 films produced in 2016.
