NHMC Stands In Solidarity With Over 175 Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Organizations Opposing A Citizenship Question on the 2020 Census

The National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) joined 177 civil rights and civil liberties groups in an amicus brief opposing an untested and dangerous citizenship question being added to the 2020 Census. Arguments outlined in the brief, NY v. Commerce submitted by the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and the Brennan Center for Justice, debunk the federal government’s argument that a citizenship question is required to enforce the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Additionally, the brief explains why the question will inevitably lead to an undercount of historically underrepresented communities that will, in turn, lose federal funding and representation.
