Washington, D.C. - Today, NHMC applauds an announcement by AT&T and T-Mobile stating that the companies will share their networks in New York and New Jersey following the devastating impact of Hurricane Sandy, which knocked out more than a quarter of cell phone towers in its path. By allowing networks to be shared in the wake of this natural disaster, wireless customers' devices will be able to seamlessly transition between networks based on which is providing a stronger signal. This will give thousands in affected areas access to more reliable communications services during this distressing time. The following statement can be attributed to Jessica Gonzalez, NHMC's Vice President of Policy & Legal Affairs: "We commend AT&T and T-Mobile for doing everything possible to provide communications in the wake of this disaster. Network sharing will enable Sandy's victims to communicate with families, request disaster assistance, and stay connected to vital services. We hope this sets a precedent for collaboration in future emergency situations."
