Description

The American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland’s Education Reform Project (ACLU) seeks a dynamic team player to fill the new position of Communications and Engagement Specialist. The Communications and Engagement Specialist will be a member of the Education Reform Project team, passionate about advocating for Baltimore City students and working for sufficient education funding and effective education policies for the city and state.  The ACLU is a non-profit organization that defends the civil rights and civil liberties of Marylanders through litigation, legislation, and public education. The Education Reform Project works to ensure that at-risk children in Baltimore and Maryland receive an adequate education, as intended by the Maryland Constitution. Major emphases are legislative, legal, and coalition campaigns on fair and equitable school funding, modernized school facilities, and school discipline. Job Description: The Communications and Engagement Strategist will work in concert with other members of the Education Reform team. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: • Write and produce Education Reform Project materials, including newsletters, legislative alerts, white papers, blogs, opinion pieces, press releases, and fact sheets on a variety of education issues handled by the project, in a clear, persuasive, action-oriented style; • Develop outreach strategies to build support for the project’s campaigns, including media plans, community engagement opportunities, online strategies, story-finding, identifying and cultivating key leaders and partners; • Work with education staff, research and develop arguments, and translate complex budget and policy documents into easy-to-follow charts, Power Points, and summaries; • Write targeted, effective campaign messages and produce content for and manage communication tools, including website, e-lists, online activism and engagement, producing short videos, memes, banners, etc.; • Build relationships with coalition partners and support the voice of parents to further their involvement in education issues and ACLU campaigns; • Give presentations at public meetings and events; • With other staff, attend school system meetings, commissions, and hearings, including those that are scheduled in the evening, to promote ACLU’s perspectives; • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director of the Education Reform Project.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and minimum of two years’ relevant professional or volunteer experience in an advocacy organization or campaign; • Excellent persuasive writing, editing, and verbal communication skills; • Experience in online communications and advocacy, social media, news media, and public relations; • Ability to communicate and engage with people and groups from diverse communities in Baltimore City; • Experience with desktop publishing programs and web design programs • Proficiency with MS Office programs; • Familiar with legislative advocacy/organizing, K-12 policy/Baltimore City schools; • Access to personal transportation (some meetings in Annapolis) and availability to work evening hours; • Commitment to race equity and social justice.
