Social Media and Communications Strategist Needed @ NHMC

Location: Pasadena, CA

Exemption Status: Exempt

PT/FT Status: Full-Time

Pay Grade: $50,000/year depending on work experience and qualifications.

Job Summary:

NHMC seeks a Social Media and Communications Strategist. Social media experience, attention to detail and excellent written skills are a requirement. This is not a spokesperson position. The position calls for an experienced individual responsible for developing and implementing an effective media and communications plan to increase the visibility of and to strategically advance NHMC’s advocacy, programs and events. The Social Media and Communications Strategist should thoroughly understand NHMC’s mission and should be able to fastidiously acclimate to NHMC’s various programs and policy advocacy.

The Social Media and Communications Strategist must be able to flourish in a fast-paced environment with a heavy emphasis on team work and collaboration. NHMC has a Washington D.C. office and this position requires Eastern Standard Time schedule availability on occasion. The Social Media and Communications Strategist will develop and maintain NHMC’s relationships with national and regional reporters, increase placement in national, local and new media, and coordinate with NHMC staff to achieve issues-based program objectives and win targeted advocacy campaigns.

NHMC will only consider applicants that are experienced social media strategists who are at the forefront of the social media revolution. The Social Media and Communications Strategist reports directly to the Executive Vice President.

Sample of Duties:

The Social Media and Communications Strategist performs a wide range of duties as assigned and requested by the California and Washington, DC offices including, but not limited to:

  • Developing and maintaining a comprehensive communications plan, with attention to developing the organization’s brand, particularly via social media.
  • Discretion to identify threats and opportunities in user-generated content.
  • Directing outreach to and fostering relationships with national and local news media, including bloggers, television bookers, print reporters, columnists, and editorial staff.
  • Implementing use of social media and new technology for publicity, campaign communications and media.
  • Coordinating media strategy with national and local allied organizations.
  • Organizing compelling news conferences, publicity, media briefings, and teleconferences.
  • Executing rapid response for breaking news stories. Weekend and after hours may be required.
  • Coordinating regular updates to key allies.
  • Creating and maintaining excellent systems for tracking and reporting media placement and contacts.
  • Working with NHMC staff to set communications goals, train staff in communications skills, and track and report on successes.
  • Drafting press releases, blog pieces and newsletters.
  • Updating and maintaining NHMC’s website and social media outlets.
  • Fielding calls from press and directing them to the right spokesperson.
  • The Social Media and Communications Strategist also performs a wide range of job duties as assigned and requested.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must have demonstrated ability to manage own work and work of others with minimal supervision.
  • Requires a high level of judgment and ability to take initiative and work independently.
  • Must be able to handle multiple "priority" projects simultaneously and set and meet deadlines.
  • Extensive knowledge of organizing advocacy communications strategies preferred, particularly via social media.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage effective relationships with staff, news media, and allied organizations.
  • Strong track record working with new and traditional media.
  • Ability to work quickly and cooperatively under pressure.
  • Energetic outlook and commitment to our progressive mission and grassroots approach to change.
  • A team orientation that combines collegiality and creativity to drive and motivate others.
  • Position requires to be on-call.
  • Weekend and after hours may be required occasionally.
  • Must be available for travel. Estimate of 20%.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Masters degree a plus, but not required. This is not an entry-level position.
  • Previous experience with organizing and civil rights action campaigns preferred but not required.
  • Previous experience with website maintenance and administration preferred but not required.
  • Previous experience with social media, writing press releases, newsletters, eblasts, and blog posts.

Communications Intern Needed @ NHMC

Location: Pasadena, CA

Exemption Status: Non-Exempt

PT/FT Status: Part-Time, Mondays and Fridays

Pay Grade: $10 per hour

Job Summary:

NHMC is looking for a qualified communications intern who is eager to learn about press/marketing/PR/social media, and has previous communications experience. The responsibilities include, but are not limited to: assisting the NHMC staff, uploading press related materials to NHMC website, compiling media lists, and other duties as assigned or requested.

Candidate should be self-starting and able to initiate and follow through on projects. Candidates should also have top-notch written and oral communication skills and be social media savvy. Position reports directly to the Executive Vice President but will also interface with NHMC staff.

Sample of Duties:

  • Assisting with media relations including performing news media research, updating media lists, and keeping record of media placements.
  • Updating organization’s website.
  • Handling social media outreaches and updates as needed.
  • Assisting on producing newsletters, and maintaining subscribers database.
  • The Communications Intern also performs a wide range of job duties as assigned and requested.

Education & Skills:

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Social Communications, Marketing, Media, or other related area required.
  • Fluent in Spanish a strong plus.
  • New media savvy desired.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Intermediate user of MS Office.
  • Must be a team player, have strong work ethics, and a “can do” attitude.
  • Initiative and dependability are a must.
  • Have strong interpersonal skills, professional appearance and demeanor.
